13989122_01122014_1Allen, Sammy K., DVM 69, of Wayzata, MN, passed away on January 8, 2014. Born in Oblong, Illinois, he was the son of Samuel Otho and Lucile (Leggitt) Allen. Sammy was a graduate of the U of Evansville IN; the U of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine; the U of MN in Comparative Dermatology; and interned at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Allen founded the Northwest Animal Hospital in 1975 and practiced general medicine, as well as his specialty of dermatology and allergy. He served on many veterinary boards and was president of the MN Veterinary Medical Association and the Affiliated Emergency Veterinary Service. He was a member of the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology and the Academy of Veterinary Allergy. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the MVMA. Dr. Allen was active in his church and his community as a sponsor of youth sports teams and Chamber of Commerce activities. He loved gourmet food, fine wine, gardening, travel and Lake Minnetonka. He was a wonderful husband to Jan (Janis Bierod), his wife of 45 years, and proud father to his beloved children, Samantha and Kirk. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Garold Sholders; nieces, Diana and Ocie Smith, Janice and Kerry Travis; his in-laws, Harold and Norma Bierod, Ron and Betty Bierod, Barbara and Michael Moore, Bryan and Tina Bierod. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, January 18, 2014, at 11 a.m., Wayzata Community Church, 125 E Wayzata Blvd. Memorials preferred toAlzheimer’s Association.
